FIRST AND TEN HOUSING KICKOFF
-
U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) attended the kick off at the Millennium Housing Addition on Tuesday, October 10th. Supporters and contributors gathered to show their appreciation to those who have worked on the project. The project says a lot about what the citizens of Centerville think about their community. They have persistence and passion to move forward. Centerville is a model for other communities, remarked Shawn Pritchett, from the SECOG, SD Rural Development Council. This first phase of a two-phased project is being constructed on land that the City of Centerville owns on the    Click to view photo gallery>>    east end of the old football field.

Johnson used his position on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee to help secure a $675,000 earmark in Fiscal Year 2003 to replace water mains for the houses that will be built in the new development. Johnson's personal ties to Centerville trace back to his great-grandfather, who was a homesteader..

"My Family was able to take root here, and it is good to see the same spirit of partnership and community that will spark a new generation to make their home in Centerville through this project," Johnson said. "The Millennium Housing Addition will not only benefit the families that will occupy these homes but it will help Centerville to continue to grow and thrive economically. We all gain when towns like Centerville prosper."

Bill Hansen, president of the Centerville Development Corporation, recognized those who played a instrumental role in the progression of the on going housing development. Hansen talked about the many individuals and organizations that have helped make the addition a reality. Eventually homes will be built on 13 lots, with the goal of increasing home ownership for young families and first-time homeowners. The ground breaking ceremony was held in August, and the partners on this housing project hope to build and sell 2 houses each year until the 13 lot development is complete.

Johnson contributed the success of the project to local leadership knowing how to piece it together. "It didn't take someone with deep pockets to make it happen. Centerville did it themselves. Eleven partners working together put their shoulder to the wheel," states Johnson.

The partners moving forward with this housing development through loan financing, development, construction and homeowner education include the South Dakota Rural Development Council, Southeastern Council of Government (SECOG), Fort Randall Telephone Company, Sioux Empire Housing Partnership (SEHP), SD Housing & Development Authority (SDHDA), Centerville City Council, Centerville Chamber of Commerce, Centerville Community Foundation, First Midwest Bank, USDA Rural Development, Centerville Development Corporation.
